Lee Chadeayne - Language Translation

Lee Chadeayne is a former classical musician, college teacher of German, and owner of a language translation company in Massachusetts.

He is accredited by ATA for translations from German into English (as well as English into German) and also translates from French. He was one of the charter members of the American Literary Translators Association and has been an active member of the American Translators Association since 1970.

He presently serves as a copy editor for the American Arthritis Society newsletter and is a past editor of The Chronicle (official publication of the American Translators Association) and editor of the ALTA News of the American Literary Translators Association.

His translated works to date are primarily in the areas of music, art, language, history and general literature.

Translation:

After searching for an American translator of one of my novels, I decided on Lee Chadeayne. A major consideration in this decision were the samples on his website.

Since then, the translation of my novel The Settlers of Catan has been completed. Having spent many years myself as a translator of literature from English into German, I was able to follow the progress of the English version of my book very carefully and critically.

What sets Lee Chadeayne apart is not just his sensitivity to style and his unfailing linguistic competence. He also succeeds in walking the fine line between the demands of faithfulness to the the original and the necessary freedom for the new text in the target language. The result is a translation that does not sound like one, but flows freely and naturally in English.

I can therefore warmly recommend working with Lee Chadeayne.

Siegfried Lenz: Lucas, Gentle Servant

A story of physical and moral survival set in Kenya during the Mau Mau Revolt against the British colonists, probably around 1950, when the movement had begun to terrorize the countryside. The narrator, an aging British farmer, has to overcome physical and emotional obstacles to try to rescue his family from being murdered by the rebels.
